{"id":6510431,"uuid":"9b74e5b8-9fb4-44f1-9be1-9073ed30b766","name":"Shane Laoch (Men)","description":"<p>Shane McGowan needs little introduction - the <strong>poet-musician<\/strong> of dereliction who became a mythic and icon figure.<\/p><p><\/p><p>The lead singer and songwriter of trailblazing <strong>Celtic punk band the Pogues<\/strong> and one of the all-time great bandleaders, he invigorated rock with the power of Irish folk music.<\/p><p><\/p><p><span>Shane sought to bring the power of Irish folk music to the rock scene, with his writing drawing from literature, mythology and the Bible. <\/span><\/p><p><\/p><p><span>He frequently wrote about <\/span><strong><span>Irish culture and nationalism <\/span><\/strong><span>and the experiences of the <\/span><strong><span>Irish diaspora. <\/span><\/strong><\/p><p><\/p><p>In Julien Temple\u2019s 2020 documentary,<strong> Crock of Gold: A Few Rounds With Shane MacGowan,<\/strong> he said:<em> \u201cI was ashamed I didn\u2019t have the guts to join the RA \u2013 and the Pogues was my way of overcoming that.\u201d<\/em><\/p><p><\/p><p>He received the Ivor Novello songwriting inspiration award in 2018, following five albums with the Pogues and various solo releases. The Pogues\u2019 highest-charting song, <strong>Fairytale of New York<\/strong>, a duet with <strong>Kirsty MacColl<\/strong>, reached No 2 in 1987 and became a Christmas classic.<\/p><p><\/p><p><span>He also produced solo material and collaborated with artists including <\/span>Joe Strummer<span>, <\/span>Nick Cave<span> and <\/span>Sin\u00e9ad O'Connor.<\/p><p><\/p><p><span>On 30 November 2023, after receiving <\/span>last rites<span>, MacGowan died from pneumonia at his home in Dublin with his wife by his side; he was 65.<\/span><\/p><p><\/p><p><span>On 8 December, MacGowan's coffin was borne through the streets of Dublin on a horse-drawn carriage as fans lined the streets for his funeral procession.<\/span><\/p><p><\/p><p><span>Later hundreds gathered inside and outside Saint Mary of the Rosary Church in <\/span>Nenagh<span>, <\/span>County Tipperary<span>, including celebrities <\/span>Nick Cave<span>, <\/span>Johnny Depp<span>, <\/span>Bob Geldof<span>, <\/span>Aidan Gillen<span>, President of Ireland <\/span>Michael D. Higgins<span> and former <\/span>Sinn F\u00e9in<span> leader <\/span>Gerry Adams<span>. <\/span><\/p><p><\/p><p><span>There was dancing inside the church as \"<\/span>Fairytale of New York<span>\" was performed by <\/span>The Pogues<span> with <\/span>Glen Hansard<span>, <\/span>Lisa O'Neill<span> and <\/span>John Sheahan<span> from <\/span>the Dubliners.<\/p><p><\/p><p>The funeral was not only open to the public but it was live-streamed, as<strong> Ireland celebrated the life of one of her favourite sons. <\/strong><\/p><p><\/p><p>As Tom Waits said following Shane's death.......<em><span>may he cast his spell upon us all forevermore.<\/span><\/em><\/p>","metaTitle":"","metaDescription":"Legend","metaImage":null,"noIndex":false,"giftWrapCompatible":true,"approvalStatus":"approved","ecoIcons":["organic-icon.png","low-carbon-icon.png","ethical-icon.png"],"isBundle":false,"specifications":"Certified Organic Cotton t-shirt, 155g\/m2.
