{"id":6585239,"uuid":"9bb045a8-5dab-4e6f-a902-4843e6eff3df","name":"Shane Laoch (Women)","description":"<p>Shane McGowan needs little introduction - the <strong>poet-musician<\/strong> of dereliction who became a mythical and iconic figure.<\/p><p><\/p><p>The lead singer and songwriter of trailblazing <strong>Celtic punk band the Pogues<\/strong> and one of the all-time great bandleaders, he invigorated rock with the power of Irish folk music.<\/p><p><\/p><p>Shane sought to bring the power of Irish  music to the rock scene, with his writing drawing from literature, mythology and the Bible.<\/p><p><\/p><p>He frequently wrote about <strong>Irish culture and nationalism <\/strong>and the experiences of the <strong>Irish diaspora - <\/strong>including the <strong>Birmingham 6.<\/strong><\/p><p><\/p><p>In Julien Temple\u2019s 2020 documentary,<strong> Crock of Gold: A Few Rounds With Shane MacGowan,<\/strong> he said:<em> \u201cI was ashamed I didn\u2019t have the guts to join the RA \u2013 and the Pogues was my way of overcoming that.\u201d<\/em><\/p><p><\/p><p>He received the Ivor Novello songwriting inspiration award in 2018, following five albums with the Pogues and various solo releases. The Pogues\u2019 highest-charting song, <strong>Fairytale of New York<\/strong>, a duet with <strong>Kirsty MacColl<\/strong>, reached No 2 in 1987 and became a Christmas classic.<\/p><p><\/p><p>He also produced solo material and collaborated with artists including Joe Strummer, Nick Cave and Sin\u00e9ad O'Connor.<\/p><p><\/p><p>On 30 November 2023, after receiving last rites, MacGowan died from pneumonia at his home in Dublin with his wife by his side; he was 65.<\/p><p><\/p><p>On 8 December, MacGowan's coffin was borne through the streets of Dublin on a horse-drawn carriage as thousands lined the streets for his funeral procession.<\/p><p><\/p><p>Later, throngs gathered inside and outside Saint Mary of the Rosary Church in Nenagh, County Tipperary, including the likes of Nick Cave, Johnny Depp, Bob Geldof, Aidan Gillen, President of Ireland Michael D. Higgins and former Sinn F\u00e9in leader Gerry Adams.<\/p><p><\/p><p>There was dancing inside the church as \"Fairytale of New York\" was performed by The Pogues with Glen Hansard, Lisa O'Neill and John Sheahan from the Dubliners.<\/p><p><\/p><p>The funeral was not only open to the public but it was live-streamed, as<strong> Ireland celebrated the life of one of her favourite sons.<\/strong><\/p><p><\/p><p>As Tom Waits said following Shane's death.......<em>may he cast his spell upon us all forevermore.<\/em><\/p>","metaTitle":"","metaDescription":"Shane McGowan needs little introduction - the poet-musician of dereliction who became a mythic and icon figure.
